Ian Matheson

Ian’s multi-disciplinary career has included leading public sector organizations of several hundred people, delivering national and international programs in the areas of environmental protection and regional economic development.

He has advised Canada’s Prime Minister, Cabinet Policy Committees and Treasury Board on health and cultural policy, as well as the management of immigration, defence and security programs.  At senior levels, he has facilitated international environmental treaty negotiations and exercised oversight in multi-billion dollar defence acquisition projects and government-wide, cost reduction exercises.

Ian began his career as a military pilot and over the course of his military career, spent four years leading strategic planning and sustainment for Canada’s contributions to peace-keeping missions in Haiti and the Middle East.

Ian began coaching part-time in 2011, and was a full-time faculty member at the Canada School of Public Service from 2014-2017.  During that period, he coached executives and also taught leadership, management and communications programs across Canada.  His specialization in leadership development is based on his training and personal experience leading change, influencing systems and aligning culture with strategy.

Ian integrates coaching methodology with his practical experience to compassionately support his individual and team clients in their growing self-awareness and confidence to lead, in increasingly complex situations.  He is recognized for his ability to develop skills in discernment and the creation of meaning, as well as in building trust and exercising influence strategically.  He draws on the latest research in neuroscience, including the interplay between the emotions, mind and body.

Ian is a certified Master Integral Coach through Integral Coaching Canada and is also certified by the International Coach Federation.  He is also certified to use a range of personality typing tools (Enneagram, DISC, Discovery Insights, ComProfiles and Birkman), as well as emotional intelligence (EQ-I 2.0) and 360 feedback tools.  He holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa and a B.A. (Honours English) from the Royal Military College of Canada.
